Music theory and solfeggio

In our lessons theory is not a list of dry rules but whatever helps you understand what you play. It is taught at the piano, as part of your piano lessons.

Reading music and rhythm

The interactive scores we use in lessons help you learn the language of music faster. You learn to read notes, note values, bars, intervals and scales — and you hear and play each idea straight away.

This is deliberate: the experimental part of the teacher’s master’s thesis showed that interactive scores and music-learning software motivate students and help them learn theory more easily and quickly.

Rhythm is practised with percussion: African djembe drums, an egg shaker and rhythm sticks.

Solfeggio and ear training

You will learn to recognise notes and chords by ear, so you can pick out the melodies you hear and play them without sheet music.

  • Singing and recognising intervals.
  • Hearing whether a melody goes up or down.
  • Telling major from minor.
  • Writing down short melodies by ear.

Ear training happens at the keyboard, not in a separate class: when you hear a tune, we try to find it on the piano straight away.

Harmony and composing

From the first lessons we improvise and make up simple melodies. If you want to take your own music further, we cover the basics of music theory, harmony and composition, and how to write your music down by hand and with notation software.

Chords are useful every day: with them you can accompany your own singing, play in an ensemble or arrange a song you love.

Theory gets as much time as you want: for some a few minutes per lesson is plenty, others want to dig into harmony and composition. Tell us in the booking form.
